David E. DeCosse

Biography

David E. DeCosse writes and teaches on many topics in general ethics - bioethics, environmental ethics, tech and ethics, engineering ethics, business ethics, etc. - but works primarily in the field of Catholic social ethics. He is especially interested in the intersection of Catholic social thought and conscience and contemporary democracy. He has written for publications ranging from academic journals like Theological Studies to more general media like National Catholic Reporter, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Jose Mercury News. In June 2022 he published Created Freedom Under the Sign of the Cross: A Catholic Public Theology for the United States, criticizing the widespread libertarian culture of the US and offers in response a constructive understanding of freedom inspired by Catholic theology. He has also done extensive work in the area of conscience, Catholicism, and public life including editing the following books: Conscience and Catholicism: Rights, Responsibilities, and Institutional Respons
