Description
This book examines the entangled lives of humans and other animals in three institutional spaces of animal confinement: the slaughterhouse, the zoo, the laboratory. When (mis)represented species remain trapped within human (hi)stories and narratives, they endure real-life consequences, including the perpetuation of their social invisibility and cultural marginalization. Navigating fiction, film, visual art, popular culture, and scientific texts, Geographies of Animal Confinement draws attention to the affective and biopolitical dimensions of human-animal interactions within these sites. By illuminating a hidden relationship between institutional space and cultural production, this book maps out an interspecies cultural history that engages with timely questions concerned with local and global food systems, conservation ideologies, and Western epistemic violence.
