Description

From the operational to the strategic, from the product to the organization, this updated handbook covers the breadth of principles, methods and practices that shape the discipline of design management.

Vast changes in the world and technologies mean public and private organizations are struggling to find their footing in retaining existing values, and generating new ones. Management remains a central task, as is the way we go about designing for people and the planet. Designers are called on to design, but are also challenged to review design principles, design methods, design processes and the very values they want to create and protect. This then, is a perfect time to revisit design management.

This second edition continues to be divided into four parts – Foundations, Influences and Transformations of Design Management; Negotiating Complexity, Organizational Change and Values; Reflections on Regional Practices and Growing Areas of Application; Contested Futures of Design Management – and each part has updated chapters, as well as the inclusion of new topics reflecting the challenges of today. Since the last edition, the intersecting issues of equity, inclusion, and sustainability are more deeply explored, with voices from India, China, Afrika and Latin America expanding the previously Euro-centric focus on these concerns within design management. Case studies looking at innovations in Brazil and Colombia explore developments in the regions, and this new edition offers further examination of alternative economic models and the ability of design to overcome the existing paradigms dominating how business, management and governments make design decisions and pursue design problems.
