Description

The Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020 was a major armed conflict between the two modern, regular armies of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

This open access book examines the course, causes, and consequences of the war. The first part of the book includes chapters covering the history of the war itself and what happened during the 44 days of fighting. The second part examines the long-term causes of the war, including: how and why diplomatic efforts mediated by the USA and Russia failed to produce a negotiated solution to the conflict; the role oil revenues and the rearming of Azerbaijan played in triggering the new war; and the kind of military strategies Armenia and Azerbaijan adopted in preparation for the new confrontation. The final section analyses the consequences of the war, including how the fighting introduced a number of new powers into the conflict zone. Including specialists from various disciplines and from both countries, the book sheds light on the war, the future of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations and ongoing strategic competition over the South Caucasus.
