Biography

Michael Chanan is a scholar, documentary filmmaker, and Emeritus Professor of Film & Video, University of Roehampton. He began his career as a freelance making documentaries for BBC2 on music and Channel 4 on Cuba and Latin America, in parallel with his first books, which range from early cinema to the social history of music, and Cuban cinema to the history of recording. He ended it doing both as an academic. His last film was Cuba: Living Between Hurricanes (2019), and after retirement, his most recent book is From Printing to Streaming: Cultural Production Under Capitalism (2022).
